After the destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple in 70 CE by the Romans, [Rabban Yochanan b. Zakkai](https://www.sefaria.org/topics/rabban-yochanan-b-zakkai?sort=Relevance&tab=notable-sources) moved the [Sanhedrin](https://www.sefaria.org/topics/sanhedrin?tab=admin) to Yavneh, which became an important center of Jewish learning, rabbinic scholarship, and the development of rabbinic Judaism.
