R. Yehoshua ben Levi, a third-century sage from the land of Israel known for his piety and his scholarship, is frequently quoted in the Talmud. He was a contemporary of [R. Chiyya](https://www.sefaria.org/topics/rabbi-chiyya?tab=admin) and the head of the academy in Lod. Among other things, he was known for his access to the prophet [Elijah](https://www.sefaria.org/topics/elijah?sort=Relevance&tab=notable-sources) and his ability to negotiate with the [angel of death](https://www.sefaria.org/topics/the-angel-of-death?tab=admin).
