R. Meir was a second century scholar whose teachings are quoted frequently in the Mishnah and throughout rabbinic literature. He studied under [Elisha b. Abuya](https://www.sefaria.org/topics/elisha-ben-abuya?tab=sources), [R. Yishmael](https://www.sefaria.org/topics/rabbi-yishmael-b-elisha?tab=sources), and [R. Akiva](https://www.sefaria.org/topics/rabbi-akiva?tab=sources). He later became the head of the court in Usha, until he [quarreled](https://www.sefaria.org/Horayot.13b.11?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en) with R. Shimon ben Gamliel. He was also known to have experienced many miracles.
