Rabban Gamliel (II) was a tannaitic sage in the first and second centuries CE. He was the first to serve as *nasi* (leader of the *[Sanhedrin](https://www.sefaria.org/topics/sanhedrin?tab=admin)*) after the destruction of the Second Temple and worked to strengthen the Jewish community and leadership in the post-Temple era. Rabban Gamliel occasionally acted in ways that involved publicly shaming other rabbis, which led to pushback and his temporary deposition.
