Hillel was one of the most influential of the early sages, active toward the end of the first century BCE and the beginning of the first century CE. Coming from Babylon to the land of Israel, he became famous for his scholarship and his patient and tolerant manner. Bolstered by his Davidic lineage, he served as *nasi* (president) of the [*Sanhedrin*](https://www.sefaria.org/topics/sanhedrin?sort=Relevance&tab=notable-sources) (judicial assembly).
